What surpasses a locally owned and operated dairy bar or ice cream stand that serves soft serve ice cream, sundaes, shakes, hot dogs, and other dairy bar food? One with all of that plus it sits along the Ohio River and has great views.
My obsession affinity for a good, local dairy bar means I frequent such places as often as I can, but in parts of the U.S. (like where I live now) there are not as many of them as in other places I have lived and visited. It makes it that much sweeter (pun intended) when I get to go back to where I used to live and find dairy bars from my past are still open and operating almost the same as they did years ago. The Jug is one of those places.
I asked my husband to get me a small vanilla ice cream cone, and he returned with this giant of a vanilla ice cream cone covered in sprinkles. He said it was a small…if so, you certainly still get your money’s worth here. When I asked him what was up with the sprinkles he said, “I thought you’d like them.” After 19 years of marriage, you would think he would know I don’t like sprinkles…
They also have good hot dogs with slaw that tasted homemade rather than the rank stuff that some places buy premade.
The Jug has a walk up area that is enclosed where you order and pick up your food. They have an area with tables that lets you to really enjoy the views and watch the barges travel up and down the river.
The Jug is located on SR 7 north of Marietta, Ohio across the river from St. Marys, West Virginia. If you are in the area, it is worth the drive if you like a good dairy bar. However, they (like many other dairy bars) are not open year round. They usually open in the spring and close in the fall. Last year, The Jug closed on September 30. So, it is advisable to check their Facebook page or call to make sure they will be open if it is the spring or fall.
