Summer brings fairs and festivals and the foods that you may only ever eat during those events. They are often foods that are relatively easy to eat as you walk/stand. Growing up in West Virginia, one of my favorite fair foods was the Taco-in-a-Bag, also known as the Walking Taco.
I was a little surprised to see it mentioned on a West Virginia episode of Andrew Zimmerman’s Bizarre Foods America…I’m certain they aren’t just a West Virginia thing. They are a version of the Frito Pie that is popular here in the southern states.
You can choose whatever type of chip you’d like to make the taco. Doritos and Fritos are the most popular. You just need to get a single serving bag.
Although I cut the top of the bag for the taco in the above photo, most of the time the bag is slit on the side…believing it makes it easier to eat.
One possible difference between my taco-in-a-bags and the ones at the fairs and festivals is that I make my own taco meat seasoning mix…I have control issues :).
These are also great to make when camping. All the toppings can be pre-cut (maybe not the tomatoes) and you only need one skillet to cook the meat. Best of all, there is little to clean up…very important to me when camping.
