A last minute decision to mix up a box of Wooden Knife Fry Bread Mix left me without all the ingredients to make “Indian Taco” meat sauce according to the recipe on the mix box. Thus, I had to make a lot of adjustments, but in the end I had very unauthentic, but delicious Indian Tacos.
Recipe: Indian Tacos
Ingredients
2 lbs. ground beef, lean
1 small onion, diced or dried equivalent
15 oz. can of tomato sauce, low sodium
1 tsp. sugar, or to taste
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. turmeric
1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. salt, or to taste
Enough water to cover
Cheese, shredded
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Sour Cream
Salsa
Black Olives, sliced
Instructions:
Lightly brown ground beef, drain if needed.
Add onion until starts to soften.
Add tomato sauce, sugar, chili powder, cumin, turmeric, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, and salt.
Add enough water to just cover the meat with liquid.
Boil for at least 10 minutes.
Taste and adjust spices as needed.
Continue to cook after adding additional spices.
Continuing to simmer mixture for longer to develop flavors more.
Spoon meat sauce over cooked Indian Fry Bread.
Add toppings of your choice like shredded cheese, lettuce, salsa, sour cream and sliced black olives.
Variations:
The original recipe called for a can of refried beans and some hot sauce.
It also used a packaged taco seasoning mix instead of the cumin, turmeric, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder.
