I almost did not share this discovery. Edible hippos are hard to find in the United States. I was not sure I wanted to compromise an already endangered supply.
Yes, I know that the hippos found in the zoo and the jungle are not edible (to the best of my knowledge), the hippos found in specialty stores, Amazon, and Europe are edible. They are called Happy Hippos. They are also very cute and very yummy.
Happy Hippos are made by Kinder/Ferrero in Germany. They come in at least two flavor varieties: milk/hazelnut and cocao (chocolate)/hazelnut. They are hippo shaped wafers filled with a nut and milk or chocolate mixture with sprinkles around the perimeter.
My sister found them at a unique grocery store near Cincinnati, Ohio called Jungle Jim’s. They sell out as soon as they hit the shelves, so it is not a good place to try and buy them. Amazon is much more reliable, but can have pricey shipping and handling charges. Family and friends traveling to or living in Europe are the best suppliers I know of currently.
