We had some of the best donuts when we visited Duck, North Carolina. We stopped by the original location of Duck Donuts as we were leaving the Outerbanks. Although parking was crowded and there was quite a line, it was worth it. As there box’s tag states, they were warm, delicious, and made to order.
I think that the fact the donuts are so freshly made that they are still warm…even hot is one of the keys to Duck Donut’s success. Another key, in my opinion, is the fact that you can choose from a variety of coating, toppings, and drizzles. You can layer them to your preference or choose one of the combos that have been proven to work.
As you may notice from our selection, my family has rather simple tastes. We did get a marshmallow drizzle added to a blueberry topped donut and added peanuts to another donut. Other than those, we stuck to just one flavor on the donuts. However, not having the donuts overloaded with toppings did allow us to easily taste the donut itself. It was very good. I think the fact the base donut is really good has to also be another key to their success.
When I started to write about Duck Donuts, I did my normal thing and pulled up their website. I must admit that I thought all of their locations were in North Carolina…specifically the Outerbanks area. However, I discovered that Duck Donuts had been offering franchises for several years and had almost 200 locations just 10 years after it was established. It turns out, there are a few locations relatively close to me. I had no idea. I now have a mission to check at least one of them out. My daughter wanted to go to one asap because it was relatively close to her favorite used bookstore.
